The Activity Center for Older Adults was started over 40 years ago by the late Sandy Friedman and late Nancy Terzino.  By securing a federal grant they were able to convert the old fire station located at 910 State Street into the Activity Center for Older Adults.  The ACOA was managed by the Swanson Center Board of Directors until April 1, 2022, when the La Porte Park and Recreation Department took the reins of operation through a grant received from the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte.

Our Activity Center for Older Adults is a place where citizens 55+ (as individuals or in groups) can gather for educational and recreational activities or simply come and socialize.  One of our goals with the ACOA is to connect members to vital community services that will help them stay healthy and independent.

We would like to thank the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte for the grant received to continue the operation of the Activity Center for Older Adults.

The facility is now located at 901 Lincolnway, La Porte, Indiana.  Calendars for the scheduled events are available on the right.  For more information on the programs being offered, please call 219-326-5354 or email

Passport to Lifestyle & Health:  Expo for Older Adults & Caregivers

Thank you to all who joined us in our very first Activity Center for Older Adults Senior Expo!  We had 257 guests who walked through the event!   We have already received a tremendous amount of very positive feedback regarding the vendors, the variety of services presented, and how knowledgeable and helpful the vendors were.  It is clear La Porte needed this Expo and we are fortunate to have so many valuable services, businesses, health care professionals, and resources available in our community.

Thank you once again to Healthcare Foundation of La Porte for making this Expo possible, to Northwest Health and Center for Hospice Care Foundation for your headline sponsorships, informative speakers and health screenings, and to our Friend Sponsor - Baker Richards Financial.   Thank you to our in-kind sponsors:  Healthcare Foundation of La Porte, Real Services, Paladin, Beechwood Golf Course, Family Express, Starbucks, Country Charm Floral, and Hacienda.  Thank you to Megan and Jeff Apple for bringing us a very talented entertainer to play piano and violin.  Thank you to our volunteers and to the Expo Committee for all of their tireless efforts.  Mark your calendars for next year's Expo at the La Porte Civic Auditorium on September 27, 2024.
